HANDEL, George Frideric - "Messiah" Jennifer Vyvyan, soprano Monica Sinclair, mezzo Jon Vickers, tenor Giorgio Tozzi, bass Royal Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus - BEECHAM, Sir Thomas RCA Victor Limited Edition (Shaded Dog) - LD6409 (4LPs) 2:41:18 John Pfeiffer, engineer This set is in very good shape with a little wear on the outside edges and the outer box is a bit concave. The inner box is split slightly on one inner edge. The spine appears to be gold-embossed leather over wood, as shown in the side view. Booklet is beautiful and in excellent condition. Full color plates are included along with the libretto, an essay on Messiah by Beecham, and an article on Handel's work. Only 1000 of these sets were issued. "Equally reviled and adored, Messiah as orchestrated by Sir Eugene Goossens and led by Beecham is an amazing aural spectacle, and a superb performance as well (actually, it has recently come to light that Beecham threw out Goossens' work and orchestrated it himself). The orchestra is huge, with piccolos, harps, extra brass, and enough cymbals for the 1812 Overture; tempos are broad, the mood is one of dramatic awe, the singers and players are excellent. Definitely not 'historically informed', but what a great experience!" - Robert Levine on CD version.CD version is a Stereophile Record2Die4. |
