Just one member of a large and highly musical family, Jean-Baptiste Loeillet was born in Ghent on November 18, 1680. He was a virtuoso flutist, oboist, and harpsichordist who wrote music for the recorder as well as the recently introduced flute, which he helped popularize. He spent almost all of his adult life in London, and became known as "Loeillet of London". His older brother, Jacques Loeillet, was also a composer, as was a cousin, also named Jean-Baptiste, who was active in Ghent. He was an active performer and teacher, hosting musical gatherings at his home every week. It was during one of these sessions that he introduced Arcangelo Corelli's 12 Concerti Grossi Op. 6 to the London music scene. Little is known of the details of his life, and only and handful of composiitons survive. He died in London on July 19, 1730.
