The Recommended CD lists contain references to over 1850 CDs, and are cross-referenced back to the Basic Repertoire List. Recommended recordings for the Basic Repertoire are given in that section. Please consult that section for a focused discussion of composers and their works that are considered basic to beginning a classical music collection, and to continuing the process of expanding musical experience by exploring some of the works that have defined the very best classical music has to offer.
This section currently contains the recommended recordings lists for a comprehensive classical music collection that includes the basic repertoire, and goes beyond it to explore the breadth of music by major and minor composers alike. These lists were last revised in august 1992. A number of excellent recordings have been released since that time, and these lists are due to be updated and expanded in the near future. Check back here for updated lists as they become available.
