When this disc came out in 1994, it was rather neglected and soon vanished from sight in the mire of deletions and label takeovers. In its new incarnation on the excellent Das Alte Werk reissue label, we can truly appreciate Stubbs' sensitive penchant for Monteverdi's work which comes alive in his splendid version of "Il combattimento".

Stubbs is also a very sensitive exponent of the other works on this disc including the rarely heard "Tirsi e Clori" whilst the opening "Tempro la cetra" is also given an interesting interpretation which equates with other similar Monteverdi luminaries such as John Eliot Gardiner or Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

As in all of these 50th anniversary issues, the presentation is excellent with detailed and punchy notes by Stubbs himself and a delightful front cover. Although the occasionally tedious vocal work may not be to everyone's taste, I'm sure that this CD will add grace to any self respecting Monteverdi collection.
