Roy Goodman's fine set of symphonies was unfortunately uncompleted with just about 30 symphonies recorded, although most of them are of top quality. Helios have issued a number of these symphonies and we are now considering the second volume that features the famous 'Matin ', 'Midi ' and 'Soir ' works, full of ebullience and beauty. Goodman is a persuasive advocate of all the symphonies, indeed he brings about a classic charm and clarity that are essential to the success of these rather early works. I still enjoy Trevor Pinnock's magnificently charged portrayals on Archiv and there are also the famous Doráti and Fischer sets to contend with. Particularly enticing is Goodman's pacing in the Presto Finales of all three symphonies and the intriguing yet almost pensive portrayals of the former Adagios. The recordings have come up as clean as a whistle and this disc is particularly attractive at the price it is being offered.
