Peter Maag needs no introduction as one of the finest conductors of his era. He was especially renowned for his interpretations of Mozart with his recordings of the symphonies and the great operas already available on the enterprising ARTS label in well nigh definitive readings.

One would assume that Gluck would be meat and drink to Maag and so it proves when one listens to this fine late 1990's interpretation of the composer's classic "Orfeo et Euridice". Maag has three fine Spanish soloists who are sadly quite underrated but they sing their roles to the manner born and with excellent orchestral accompaniment the SACD sound is an added bonus.

ARTS provide a superb essay which weights the importance of this late recording to the Peter Maag legacy and there is also a full libretto as well as an English translation. Some minor cuts trim the work down to slightly over 100 minutes but otherwise this is an essential addition to the burgeoning Maag discography on this truly enterprising German label.
