After their recent forays into some memorable Wagner operas directed by Rafael Kubelík, ARTS have now given us this equally splendid recording of a 1973 'Traviata' with Freni, Bonisolli and Bruscantini in the major roles. The recording is fresh and invigorating on the whole and the set as a whole is most deserving of resurrection.

Freni is a superb Violetta and this voice was in its absolute prime in 1973. Here singing in the Fifth scene is beyond reproach whilst in the concluding notes of this great opera, she brings a pathos and sense of tragedy that is quite similar to the legendary Callas. Bonisolli is a solid and dependable Alfredo although he does not scale any particular heights whilst Bruscantini is excellent as Germont.

Arts also provide a libretto in Italian together with notes and synopsis so for all this at such a low price, I would be very happy to start off on 'Traviata' with this fine recording.
