The Lindsay's Haydn quartet cycle continues apace with this excellently polished recording grouping the middle Op. 64 quartets. Here one is intrigued by The Lindsay's impeccable performance of the famous 'Lark' quartet with its distinctive chirping sounds and wonderful sense of the ethereal. I doubt if these masters can be bettered although I am also fond of my Chandos tape featuring the Gabrieli Quartet. In all three works the Lindsays play with an affectionate love for the music and bring out the glories of Haydn's masterly quartet writing. I already mentioned the Chandos alternative but the real competition comes from Decca's massive Aeolian String Quartet box set that includes the complete works, here there may be a slight edge but on the whole I would say that The Lindsays continue to set new standards in the quartet repertoire.
