The Lindsay's complete traversal of Haydn's String Quartets continues with this issue grouping the first three from Op. 64. These are middle-of-the-road pieces with lots of melody and beauty although not much fireworks to write home about. #1 includes an expansive Allegro moderato that lasts almost nine minutes whilst the concluding Finale includes some wizard like writing for the first violin. The B minor quartet that follows also includes some delightful moments especially in the pensive Adagio ma non troppo that moves along quite lazily, there is some wonderful work from Ronald Birks playing the second violin. The third quartet in the series has one of the best finales of the set, an Allegro con spirito that is vintage Haydn. We have already had recordings of this set from the Lindsays but this newly refurbished package is now a must for enthusiasts of this fine ensemble. AS&V's recording is from the top drawer and the notes are also very fine.
