Bach Cantata Listener's Guide

Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and mouth and deed and life)

Cantata 147a

  • Fourth Sunday in Advent
  • Epistle: Phil. iv. 4-7 (Rejoice in the Lord always)
  • Gospel: John i. 19-28 (Make straight the way of the Lord)

Cantata BWV 147a is lost but some of it can be reclaimed since BWV 147 is a parody of BWV 147a. BWV 147a/1 corresponds to BWV 147/1, BWV 147a/2 corresponds to BWV 147/3, BWV 147a/3 corresponds to BWV 147/7, BWV 147a/4 corresponds to BWV 147/5 and BWV 147a/6 corresponds to BWV 147/9. BWV 147a/7 is a lost chorale. You can find the text of BWV 147a in Dürr. Also take a look at the BWV and at the critical commentary to NBA I/1.
