The Emerson Quartet finally make a welcome return to disc in this triptych of Mozart String Quartets titled "Prussian". We have the perfect ensemble for these works which need maturity and youthful exuberance in one lot to make them fully effective and we definitely get it here.

K 575 is played with an energetic vigour which belies the Emerson's age and there's vitality in abundance here. The same could be said for K 589 which is another splendid work and which shows that the Emerson have not lost anything of their vitality and momentum. Finally there's K 590 with its irresistible forward Allegro and bashful Finale which summarizes the spirit of these great quartets.

The Emerson play with a brilliance and energy that has to be heard to be believed. Sony provide an excellent essay by Anthony Burton by way of notes which add to the allure of the disc. A winner all the way.
