This is the first recording of Rosetti's Viola Concerto and it is a splendid one. Nils Mönkemeyer, a young German viola player, lately has gained several famous awards. He presented himself impressively early this year with a recording of his own arrangement of Franz Schubert's "Arpeggione" Sonata, as well as several romantic Lieder arrangements.
A very high-spirited performance of Rosetti's viola concerto again proves the viola player's thrilling artistic and technical skills and strikingly so in the remarkable cadenzas which he improvised on the spot while recording the music. Hoffmeister's viola concerto is a well-known war-horse and receives a performance of exuberant spirits as do Mönkemeyer's arrangements of Bach's cantata movements.
