Joseph Vella

Concertos

  • Concerto for 2 Pianos Solo, Op. 99
  • Concerto Barocco, Op. 92
  • Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 76
Natascha Chircop, piano
Marco Rivoltini, piano
Franco Sugoni, bassoon
Orchestra Goffredo Petrassi
Orquestra Nacional de Porto/Joseph Vella
PRO Studios 57m DDD

These three concertos confirm Joseph Vella's creative stance as one of the most interesting composers whose brain remains highly fertile.

The Concerto for Two Solo Pianos is dashingly virtuosic and receives a splendidly effusive interpretation from Chircop and Rivoltini, two highly gifted soloists who have been working closely with Professor Vella.

The Concerto Barocco is another intriguing work, full of exploratory tonal ramifications and an intrinsic pulse that holds a throbbing beat, surely one of Vella's most accessible works. Once again, the interpretation is of the highest quality with Franco Sugoni playing the bassoon part with the utmost conviction and a fine orchestral accompaniment that manages to blend the beauty of the baroque influences with the more modernist rhythmic incisions.

Finally there is the lovingly paced Flute Concerto, another lofty piece that shows Vella's preoccupation with sight, sound and motion. The acrobatic virtuoso parts are admirably played by Chircop who is accompanied with knowing intuition by the composer.

PRO Studios' recording is top notch with the balance between solo instruments and orchestra quite ably managed. Lovers of Vella's music should not hesitate in acquiring this fine disc.
