Dabringhaus & Grimm continues in their exemplary survey of Burgmuller's quartets with this issue featuring works from Op. 4 and Op. 9.

The Mannheimer quartet are obviously enjoying themselves throughout and play the music with easygoing serenity and a lopsided happiness that brings much colour to the faster outer movements.

It is easy to realize that the best work on offer here is the #3, Op. 9 that is a four movement structure beginning with an expansive Allegro that is full of memorable tunes. The Finale is also a beautiful structure with some fine fiddling towards the end.

One must make it clear that Burgmuller is no Haydn or Beethoven but anyone who has listened to snatches of his music before could do much worse than purchase this disc.
