Calamus Ensemble

This is the second disc in a most intriguing survey of Brandl's entertaining and well-constructed quintets for bassoon, piano, and string trio. (Vol 1: MDG6031133.)
Op. 13 is a lovely three movement piece where the F Major key is prominent in the bassoon part expertly played by Rainer Schottstadt. I warmed to the 'salon' type feel of the work especially in the opening and expansive Allegro.
The Op. 61 and 62 are much more complex works but no less entertaining. Op. 61 is a four movement work which is almost a small symphony with a whirlwind Allegro Finale that really brings out the expertise of the Calamus Ensemble.
The three movement Op. 62 is also very enterprising with a three part Finale that also shows Brandl's prowess as a composer for wind instruments. There is no slow movement this time with the short introduction to the Finale doubling as one.
I have absolutely no qualms with the interpretations of the Calamus Ensemble who bring a certain authority to these rare works. If you have already experimented with Volume 1 then you will want to snap up this second issue.
