MD&G has done Telemann a sterling service by issuing a large number of his works in attractive packages with some of Germany's best players.
This latest set featuring the somewhat laborious and very academic, Sonate metodiche is a case in point with the famed flautist Konrad Hünteler playing with assured knowledge and empathy with the scores. There are twelve sonatas in all, the shortest lasting just over seven minutes whilst the longest clocks in at thirteen minutes and a half. All follow the normal fast-slow-fast format and there are also some interesting parts for the cello and an impressive continuo throughout.
I could not really single out particular sonatas for merit, all are sound exercises and will definitely appeal to the baroque purist. MD&G provide good notes although the translations leave a lot to be desired. Telemann enthusiasts will definitely snap this up and baroque enthusiasts should also give it a shot.
