The short-lived Casimir Cartellieri was definitely a composer of note and this is amply demonstrated in this comprising three clarinet quartets. Dieter Klocker is a comfortable exponent of the many beautiful melodies that are found embedded in the music, very Mozartian in nature and which dances along at a pretty pace!

The opening Quartet #2 is probably the best work here, albeit the shortest. The intriguing bit is the short Adagio lasting just over 1 minute but which then unfolds over to a lovely Menuet followed by some beautiful variations in an Andante con Variazioni.

The First Quartet is more classical in manner with a twelve-minute-long Allegro moderato that lasts almost as long as the other three movements put together. The Fourth Quartet is in three movements and looks forward to the great quartet by Mozart which is roughly contemporary.

Lovely music and playing then and I would definitely be interested in more from this composer.
