John Williams surely needs no introduction as one of the finest film composers around having composed legendary scores for a vast number of films including the Star Wars trilogy and Schindler's List. For 'War of the Worlds' he has composed a synthetic and highly charged score full of melodies and at times, sheer power that blends beautifully with the story of an alien invasion.
Morgan Freeman's (of 'Amistad' fame) atmospheric narration provides the ideal introduction to the sinister sounds of the Prologue with 'The Fiery Scene' and 'Escape from the City' suitably charged with excitement and palpable passion. The heart of the score is reached with 'The Attack on the Car' and the touchingly sentimental 'The Reunion' with an Epilogue that truly sears the heart.
Although the sound is suitably opulent and the disc is well filled, I would have appreciated a small synopsis on the film in the booklet, as all it contains is a myriad of film stills. Otherwise, the soundtrack is another feather in the cap for John Williams who continues to reaffirm his status as one of the world's première film music composers.
