This classic recording of Giordano's rather underrated opera 'Fedora' returns to the catalogue in the Classic Opera line, a straight reissue from its old position on the 'Grand Opera' format.
There is nothing much to add to the previous reviews of this fine recording which has the legendary Magda Oliveiro in excellent voice singing the roles of Francesca and Fedora in both operas. There has not always been the same agreement on the contribution of the big-voiced Mario del Monaco but one cannot fail to be thrilled by the sheer awesome power of that voice in its full prime of the early 1960's.
The supporting roles are also star studded especially Tito Gobbi as De Sirieux. Decca's recording sounds even more astonishing today than it did when this set was first issued and both operas receive fine conducting from Gardelli and Rescigno. The original notes still haven't made it to the reissue but otherwise, if you haven't snapped up this version in the past, you may as well do it now.
