This is a fine and rapt conclusion to the excellent Bach piano music series by Angela Hewitt. We have a variety of miscellaneous and short pieces that prove to be fascinating in their own right although there are also some beautiful gems here. Hewitt is a peerless interpreter of these wonderful works and as always Hyperion's recording is as kind as possible to the solo instrument.
The Fantasia and Fugue in A minor is a tuneful work, with Hewitt virtually sailing across the notes in an accomplished and highly entertaining manner. Next is an exquisite rendering of the Aria Variata 'alla Maniera Italiana', sixteen minutes of pure bliss, especially in the mesmerizing closing parts. Three nine minutes pieces are next, a Sonata in D Major, a Partie in A and a Suite in F minor which are again dispatched by Hewitt with summary panache.
The disc winds down with a number of short curiosities, most which are shavings off the master's workbench but also ravishingly beautiful such as the minute Fugue in C and the concluding Fantasia and Fugue in A minor, rounding off the disc with another piece in that key. Completists will definitely want this disc for their Bach-Hewitt collection and discerning pianophiles are urged to purchase for this record's mellow and lovely piano playing.
