This is the second disc that Hyperion has devoted to Stojowski and I can say from the start that it is a clear winner. I had been rather unimpressed by this composer's piano concertos but his solo piano music is clearly a different matter. Jonathan Plowright is a fine interpreter and everything goes like the proverbial clockwork.

'Deux Pensées musicales' are marked Op. 1 and do show some immaturity but otherwise the pieces are reflective and melodic. 'Deux Orientales', Op. 10 are full of fantastic allusions, no doubt created by the composer's fascination with all things Oriental and Far Eastern. The 'Fantasie' is a free moving work, which evidently enthuses Plowright, this is a work that does deserve wider currency.

There are a few pieces from other larger works such as the 'Aspirations' and 'Quatre Morceaux pour piano'. The Cracovian theme from the latter is quite beautiful and Plowright finds a dazzling virtuosity in the notes. The disc concludes with a spectacular Variations and Fugue on an original theme, Op. 42, another essay in pianistic virtuosity that Plowright evidently enjoys immensely as a barnstormer.

Notes are profuse and the disc's presentation is of the usual Hyperion standards with a lovely painting on the cover titled, 'The Strange Garden' by Mehoffer. The recordings are also excellent and Plowright is well suited to the music which is quite beautiful at times. Lovers of the piano will definitely enjoy this well filled and superbly interpreted disc
