Listening to this beautiful disc, one is reminded that classical music is still alive and well in such deep expression such as Pärt's thoughtful and magnificent contributions to the genre.
Stephen Layton's 'Polyphony' can be counted as one of the best choirs currently in action and they are equally suited to impart the necessary drive and passion to Pärt's often profoundly moving music.
'Dopo la vittoria' is an exquisite piece of choral beauty that opens the disc with a sense of rare triumph. This is followed by the equally loving 'Nunc dimittis', also magnificently sung by Polyphony. The style is reminiscent of Rubbra and a combination of Stravinsky but there is Pärt's unmistakeable stamp of thoughtful reminiscences.
However my favourite piece on disc must be the exquisite, 'My heart's in the Highlands' with the important contribution of David James' countertenor voice. The other works are no less memorable in stature and the disc is definitely to be recommended to all lovers of choral music.
Other features that add grist to this release's mill, are the outstanding notes on each and every work by Meurig Bowen. Pärt's music is an important living testament to the power of spirituality.
