This is the third release in Hyperion's estimable Romantic Violin Concerto series, this time dedicated to Jenő Hubay, the famous Hungarian virtuoso.
The Third Violin Concerto is brimful of ideas and with a virtuoso performance by Hagai Shaham, a sensational young violinist who really puts the music through its paces.
Lovers of the violin repertoire will also wax lyrical on the 4th Concerto, a truly beautiful work that offers similar opportunities for the soloist.
What is interesting is that Hubay wrote these concertos in four movements instead of the normal three, this affords a certain amount of variety and make the works look like mini-symphonies.
As always, the sound is top quality and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra are obviously enjoying themselves under the charismatic direction of Martyn Brabbins. Strongly recommended to all those fiddler lovers!
