C.P.E. Bach's oratorio on the Ascension of Christ has been recorded before but this newly minted version on Hyperion is very welcome.
Kuijken is a knowledgeable and industrious exponent of the music and he imparts a certain cut and thrust to proceedings that make the solos and choruses move quite merrily along. The conductor is also aided by a superb team of soloists, with Schwabe a particularly exciting discovery.
Ex Tempore and La Petite Band are obviously, magisterial exponents of the music and the whole project is an enjoyable listening experience from first note to last. The work is of paramount importance as an useful bridge between Handel's oratorios and the Haydn ones so you would not be spoiling yourself if you added it to your collection.
