This is a delightful disc featuring some lesser known composers in a number of recorded premières.

Gordon Jacob's 'Concertino' is an eleven-minute piece that brings together some fine virtuoso elements married with an intrinsically charged drive. Gibbs' similarly titled work offers some delightful interplay between piano and orchestra. Cyril Rootham's 'Miniature Suite' is also very appealing especially in the slow sections. The lamented Robin Milford is also represented by the lovely Concertino in E Major, another work that demonstrates the capabilities of this underrated composer. Armstrong Gibbs is featured again with the succinctly titled Peacock Pie whilst Madeleine Dring's aptly titled Festival Scherzo for piano and strings concludes a really excellent collection of English works.

Martin Roscoe plays with consummate artistry and empathy for the music which is of a consistently high quality throughout. The recording is from the top drawer with almost ideal balance between the instrument and the orchestra.
