We often overlook Clara Schumann in favour of her more illustrious husband Robert, but it is common knowledge that she was a composer of superior craftsmanship and excellent prowess. This is demonstrated in this lovingly produced Hyperion CD dedicated to her output in the Lieder genre in which she was definitely top-notch.
The short songs after Ruckert are lovingly sung with Susan Gritton particularly enticing in her interpretations. The Six Songs are also particularly enticing especially the trenchant, 'Ich hab' in deinem Auge', full of particular charm and effusion. The same goes for the Sechs Lieder aus Jucunde' also full of character and special ebullience.
The motley collection of Lieder that accompanies the rest of the album is a treasure trove of forgotten gems and wondrous beauties wrapped away in the mists of time and wonder. Of particular charm are the serene, 'Lorelei' and the aptly titled 'Der Wanderer'.
The whole project must have been a true labour of love for all concerned and it is definitely a must for lovers of the song genre.
