It is good of Hyperion to reissue these fine piano recordings of Seta Tanyel's performances relating to Mozkowski and Scharwenka from the now defunct Collins Classics label. This is the second volume in the series devoted to Scharwenka and contains some fine works such as the exquisite Piano Sonata #2 Op. 36. This shows the composer's cosmopolitan instincts at their brilliant best and also demonstrates the utter spellbinding virtuosity that appertains to Tanyel's playing; she certainly understands the idiom hands down on all counts!
I also enjoyed the 'Romanzero', a four-movement work that is a sonata in all but name with an especially bombastic Allegro that concludes the work in true heroic fashion. The exquisite Sonatine and the thub-thumping Polish Dances are also very fine. Collins' recording was always of the highest order and the new presentation and price makes this collection an outstanding bargain for all pianophiles.
