This is another straight reissue from the munificent Hyperion back catalogue and was always considered a favourite for its wide selection of music and excellent musicality.
That George Weigand's perennially brilliant CD is now available at such a low price is true cause for rejoicing. There are a number of works which span a large selection of music especially the instrumental pieces which confirm Spanish involvement in the musical scene as one of crucial importance. Amongst the composers one may find Gaspar Sanz, Hidalgo, Guereau and de Ribayaz, all of them important stalwarts in the post Renaissance period.
My immediate comparison was AliaVox's otherwise excellent CD with Jordi Savall and the Hesperion XX which also contains a good number of sacred pieces but I could just plump for Weigand's brilliant musicality all round, especially at this price. Notes from the original issue are also reproduced in their entirety.
