These are classic recordings of the Weber symphonies that were previously available on the RCA Victor Red Label. I retain the original LP for sentimental reasons and am indeed happy to report that the remastering by Guild has now brought about true unbridled character and redefines the seminal importance of these recordings.
The Turandot sequences are lovingly played with the percussion a constant delight especially in the ubiquitous March. The same informal beauty permeates these symphonies which are miracles of miniaturist harmony and melody. Although not top drawer music, Weber is definitely a fine craftsman on all counts and the dashing prestos that conclude the works are informed with unbridled energy.
Schoenzeler reveals his passion for the music in the scholarly notes that accompany the disc. Although there have been other recordings of these works since, none can displace the uniqueness of this recorded event and thanks to the enterprising Guild label, they are available once again.
