Bach's Cello Suites have had some notable exponents over the years and with this new double disc set, Luigi Piovano can certainly be counted as one of those select few. In this beautifully presented set, Piovano finds that soul searching longing which permeates these haunting works, especially in the Third Suite in C major, BWV 1009 – a truly beautiful work.
Piovano finds them to enunciate the quieter moments of these pieces but he is also a dab hand at the more sprightly parts such as the Bourees and Gavottes in the final three suites.
Superb stuff then and deserved of a recommendation although one can always go for separate versions of an older historical mould such as Cortot or Casals and add this splendid new version to their collection.
