Dutton continue to release such splendid 1950's albums in double disc sets that show what a proliferation of talent existed in those days of early stereo. This time it is Stanford Robinson who is given credit for his enormous contribution to the British Light Music genre.
The first disc is entitled, 'Eric Coates Favourites' and is devoted exclusively to that great composer. Amongst the items of interest is a spanking rendition of the delightful ballet, 'The Enchanted Garden' and a couple of rousing pieces such as 'London Bridge' and 'Footlights'. The music is made to sound thrillingly atmospheric at fast tempi and the raw direct sound also adds to the immediacy.
On the second disc we have four suites from the past with great names such as Paul Rubens, Josef Strauss, Lionel Monckton and the unforgettable Edward German. Each suite contains a host of melodies that are delightfully and skilfully intertwined in pot- pourri's of unabashed orchestral splendour. Robinson and the Pro Arte Orchestra are again top of their game in such glorious repertoire.
The two original LPs are given separate discs but the album is offered for the price of one. But the quality of this release is quite ravishing and I do recommend an immediate purchase.
