This highly original quartet of French concertos is to my mind for the first time available in one collection. Oleg Marshev is a pianist who brings committed passion and high quality to the keyboard and he is particularly invigorating in the Ravel concertos especially the scintillating Concerto for the Left hand.

One of my favourite works remains Franck's Symphonic Variations which is positively brimful with colour and invention. Marshev is a persuasive exponent and rather reminds me of the hors conceurs Decca version with Sir Clifford Curzon which to my mind at least still remains the one to have here. Finally there's the quite rare Debussy which also comes alive quite ravishingly under Marshev's fingers.

Throughout, Vladimir Ziva conducts with passion and evident feeling for these fine Gallic works. Danacord's recording is excellent if just a little thin on the South Jutland strings although the orchestra is remarkably respondent throughout. This is a fine collection for those who wish to have all these works in one helping.
