Yet another excellent disc of Russian repertoire from the ongoing and blossoming Chandos/Sinaisky partnership. Having already recorded a complete Glazunov cycle together with a number of other composers of the ilk of Balakirev, Tanayev and Liadov, Sinaisky now turns his attention to that famous countryman of his, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakoff.
The works chosen on this CD are a mix of the popular and the extremely rare. The 'Legend' surely falls into the latter category and here it is given a truly masterful performance in all departments. The two overtures, much more heard nowadays are also full of interpretative glitches which add spice to the colourful music, especially the wonderfully atmospheric, 'Maid of Pskov'. Sinaisky adds the Sinfonietta on Russian Themes and the evergreen Capriccio, both of which sparkle in the ideal recordings.
Seasoned collectors will undoubtedly have multiple versions of the more famous works in their collections but surely, this state of the art recording is in a different league. We have detailed yet concise notes by the expert John Warrack and as already indicated, the recorded sound is truly top class. This is another fine enterprising project from Chandos which deserves every success.
