As with practically every work by J.S., these two cantatas have a particular reason for their composition. 'Unser Mund sei voll Lachens' BWV 110 (Let our mouth be full of laughter) was written for the first day of Christmas and accordingly, the music is full of light, happiness and hope. Scored for flutes, oboes, trumpets, bass drums and strings, it sings the praises of the birth of Jesus Christ and fills the listener with feelings of unbounded joy.

The tribute cantata 'Der zufriedengestellte Aoelus', BWV 205 (Aeolus pacified) is a 'Drama per musica' and was probably premièred in 1725, at the request of the students of Dr. August F Mueller, a professor at Leipzig University who was much loved and respected. The piece is, maybe, one of Bach's most dramatic cantatas and the consistently high level of the composer's inspiration is a testimony of his love for Leipzig and its seat of learning.

Performances are wonderfully committed and although Nancy Argenta apart, the singers are not household names, they certainly have this music under their skin. The SACD sound is simply gorgeous, adding further enjoyment to an issue of absolutely superb quality.
