The repertoire on this recording consists of songs by composers who were caught up in the current of nation building that emerged in the latter part of the 19th century and a new formed artistic current.
Louis Spohr is by far the most represented with six items whilst Lachner is present with two of his songs. Donath sings with exemplary diction throughout and the beguiling sounds of the clarinet played by the erstwhile Dieter Klöcker are also extremely welcome.
There is also space for Kalliwoda and Schubert with just a song each although the timing is a bit short at just 51 minutes. However at mid price, this CD is an interesting compendium of songs from a bygone era reproduced in acceptable sound.
