Peter Maag's love for Mozart has been well documented and this superb disc is a true testament to the conductor's affection for this great composer. It has been said that Symphonies #25 and #29 are the most perfect of the Mozartian symphonic canon and Maag's interpretation surely bears witness to such testimony.
The refreshing and relaxed Sinfonia Concertante is also a rare delight for Maag enthusiasts. An expansive Allegro with some excellent solo playing gives way to a lovely Adagio that culminates in the most delicate Andantino con variazioni. The Italian players really love this music and under Maag's direction all is replete with classical aplomb.
The symphonies are true models of Mozartian grace and perfection. Symphony #25 is given a true classical reading with a lovely Allegro con brio and an equally gorgeous Andante. I really cannot think of this work being better done. Symphony #29 is similarly gorgeous particularly in the First Movement which is a model of unforced motion.
Recordings are clear although they suffer from some slight reverberation in places. However all Mozartians and Maag enthusiasts should definitely acquire this disc as it really is a true testament to the greatness of this conductor in a tribute to the composer he loved best.
