With Soloists for Mahler's "Symphony of a Thousand"
|
Stokowski conducted the American premiere of Mahler's "Symphony of a Thousand" (Symphony #8) in 1916. He had managed to steal in and watch Mahler rehearse the world premiere and attended it, too. The resulting performances, in New York as well as Philadelphia, put Stokowski on the cover of Time magazine for the first of two times in Stokowski's life. In this photo are the soloists of the performance. From left to right:
Margaret Keys, Susan Dream, Inner Barber, Clearance Whitehall, Leopold Stokowski, Alexander van Rensslaer (President of the Philadelphia Orchestra Association) Florence Tinkle, Reined Werrenrath, Adelaide Fischer, and Lambert Murphy. |
