Bach Cantata Listener's Guide

O angenehme Melodei (Oh Pleasing Melody)

Cantata BWV 210a, BC G 29

  • Homage to Duke Christian of Saxe-Weissenfels
  • Editions: BG 29; NBA I/39

As well as being a homage to Duke Christian (in 1729) this cantata was also performed as a homage to Count Joachim Friederich von Flemming (military governor of Leipzig) some years later. Unfortunately, the latter appears to have repeated his hex on the work (BWV 249a and BWV Anh I 10, in his honour, are also lost) since all that survives of this cantata is the soprano part. Fortunately, most of the music survives in the later parody BWV 210, so that only the recitatives are completely lost. The correspondence between this work and BWV 210 is quite straightforward, all arias being taken over in order. I'm not aware of any reconstructions of this work and certainly not of any recordings.
