Bach Cantata Listener's Guide

Herr Gott, Beherrscher aller Dinge (Lord God, ruler of all)

Cantata 120a

  • Wedding Cantata

The wedding cantata BWV 120a has come down to us in incomplete form and as far as I'm aware, there are no recordings of it. You can however get a taste for what it's like by finding the text in Dürr and listening to BWV 120, since it is thought that BWV 120, BWV 120a and BWV 120b were all adapted from the same lost Köthen original. BWV 120a/1 corresponds to BWV 120/2, BWV 120a/3 corresponds to BWV 120/4, BWV 120a/4 comes from BWV 1006/1, BWV 120a/6 corresponds to BWV 120/1, BWV 120a/8 corresponds to BWV 137/5 and the intervening recitatives 2, 5 and 7 have to be imagined. You can also look at NBA I/33 for a reconstruction.
