Aesthetics and the Art of Musical Composition in the German Enlightenment - Selected Writings of Johann Georg Sulzer and Heinrich Christoph Koch (Cambridge Studies in Music Theory and Analysis #7), Johann Georg Sulzer, et al. 1995. ISBN 0521360358 (hardcover).
-
Sulzer's abstract philosophical ideas are applied to concrete questions of musical pedagogy. This translation of the texts and study of the collaboration represents a significant confluence of philosophical and musical thought from the German enlightenment.
-
Mahler's Sixth Symphony - A Study in Musical Semiotics (Cambridge Studies in Music Theory and Analysis #6), Robert Samuels. 1996. ISBN 052148166X (hardcover).
-
This study uses a semiotic theory of signification in order to investigate different types of musical communication. Musical meaning is defined on several levels from structure, through questions of tradition and genre, to consideration of the symphony as a narrative alongside other contemporary nonmusical texts. Ideas from Eco, Barthes and Derrida are deployed within the context of close analysis of the score in order to unite specifically analytical insights with cultural hermeneutics.
-
Franz Schubert: Sexuality, Subjectivity, Song - A Study in Musical Semiotics (Cambridge Studies in Music Theory and Analysis #13), Lawrence Kramer. 1998. ISBN 0521582105 (hardcover).
-
This book shows how Schubert, responding to the great social changes of his era, discovered that songs could project a kaleidoscopic array of human and sexual types – some strange, some familiar, some appealing, some forbidding, but all eligible for a sympathetic response. The book combines close attention to both music and poetry to explain the social context of this process and show it at work in a lively, accessible style free of excessive jargon.

Alban Berg: Master of the Smallest Link. Theodor W. Adorno, Christopher Hailey & Juliane Brand (translators). 1994. ISBN 0521330165 (hardcover), 0521338840 (paperback).
-
This unique study of Austrian composer Alban Berg (1885-1935) is now a part of music history. It is a personal account by Theodor Adorno (1903-1969), a preeminent philosopher and aesthetician, of the life and musical works of his mentor, friend, and composition teacher. In addition to analyses of individual pieces, the book explores the historical and cultural significance of Berg's music, its relationship to that of other nineteenth- and twentieth-century composers, and to the larger issues of contemporary life. This classic study provides a key to understanding Adorno himself as well as offering an individual perspective on one of the major composers of this century.

-
Reconfronts the myth of Mahler-the-misunderstood-hero and attempts to find the person, or persons, behind the legends. His illuminating biography shows Mahler to be a profoundly sensitive thinker and composer, a dictatorial conductor and husband, an iconoclast and paradoxically, a traditionalist.

The Masterwork in Music Vol. 3 (1930) (Cambridge Studies in Music Theory and Analysis #10), Heinrich Schenker, et al. 1997. ISBN 052145543X (hardcover).
-
Comprises the main writings from the mid-1920s to 1930 of the eminent Austrian theorist and music-philosopher, Heinrich Schenker (1868-1935) that range from detailed analyses of individual works to discussions of music theory in a historical/cultural context to general thoughts about music, art and culture. Volume 1 includes analyses of keyboard works by Bach, Scarlatti, Chopin, Beethoven and Handel and solo violin music by Bach, as well as more general essays on aspects of Schenkerian theory. Volume 2 contains a major essay on Mozart's Symphony #40 in G minor and other studies of Bach keyboard and solo cello works, Haydn and Reger, as well as writings on sonata form and fugue and Schenkerian theory. The third and final volume is dominated by the most detailed and, for many, the most celebrated of all of Schenker's studies of single works: the analysis of Beethoven's Eroica Symphony. All four movements are discussed and graphed in painstaking detail. Translated by Ian Bent, Richard Kramer, John Rothgeb, Heidi Siegel, Derrick Puffet, Alfred Clayton, and William Drabkin.

Schenker's Argument and the Claims of Music Theory (Cambridge Studies in Music Theory and Analysis #9), Leslie David Blasius. 1996. ISBN 0521550858 (hardcover).
-
Heinrich Schenker's theoretical and analytical method occupies an important and controversial position in modern musical studies. His writings claim to resubstantiate the unique artistic presence of the canonic work, and reject those disciplines, such as psychoacoustics and systematic musicology, which derive from the natural sciences. This book rereads Schenker's project as an attempt to reconstruct music theory as a discipline against the background of the new empirical musical sciences of the later nineteenth century, such as the psychological and historical investigations of music.

Haydn's "Farewell" Symphony and the Idea of Classical Style - Through-composition and Cyclic Integration in His Instrumental Music (Cambridge Studies in Music Theory and Analysis #1), James Webster. 1991. ISBN 0521385202 (hardcover).
-
A new view of Joseph Haydn's instrumental music that argues that many of Haydn's greatest and most characteristic instrumental works are "through-composed" in the sense that their several movements are bound together into a cycle. Webster challenges the concept of "classical style" which, he argues, has distorted our understanding of Haydn's development, and he stresses the need for a greater appreciation of Haydn's early music and of his stature as Beethoven's equal.

Comprehensive study of the influential music theorist, Heinrich Schenker (1868-1935). Without compromising the highly technical side of Schenker's theory that has chiefly preoccupied earlier writers, the author reveals the humanist side of Schenker's approach to understanding European music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including how metaphor and imagery are interwoven with technical analysis in Schenker's attempts to portray the richness of musical experience and the complexity of the composer's mind.

Cori Spezzati Vol. 2: An Anthology of Sacred Polychoral Music. Anthony F. Carver. 1989. ISBN 0521361729 (paperback).
-
Deals with polychoral church music from its beginnings in the early 1500s to its climax in the work of Gabrieli and Schutz. The title comes from a tradition of polychoral music where the singers, and sometimes instrumentalists, were split into two or more groups engaged in lively musical dialogue and joined in majestic tutti climaxes. This volume draws on contemporary descriptions of the idiom, especially from the writings of Vicentino and Zarlino, but concentrates mainly on musical analysis, showing how antiphonal chanting, dialogue, and canon influenced the phenomenon. Polychoral music, but with impressive pomp. Carver's study shows that it was cultivated by many composers outside Venice - in Rome, all over Northern Italy, in Germany, Spain, and the New World. Also included is music by several major composers about whom there is little literature available are treated in depth: the Gabrielis, Lasso, Palestrina, Victoria, and some German masters. A companion volume anthologizes seventeen complete pieces of music, most of which are analyzed in the text of Volume 1.
