The German company Speakers Corner is continuing in their much lauded traversal throughout the gems of the Decca back catalogue with another stunning repress of this legendary Wolff/PCO record entitled 'Overtures in HiFi'
Indeed, the word high fidelity certainly springs to mind when listening to these finely crafted and superbly engineered performances. Adam's 'If I were King' fairly leaps out of my Quad ESL 63's with its presence and my SME 3012/V-15 combination was certainly revealing of the lovely violin work in 'The Merry Wives of Windsor'. The other overtures are also vintage stuff with Wolff showing his prowess at some of the most admired works in the French and Austrian operatic canon.
The 180-gram vinyl pressing is absolutely faultless and the nostalgic look of Andrew Porter's notes makes for an unforgettable musical experience. All of these greats may have long departed but this LP lives on, for almost 50 years it has remained standard classic, now enjoyable in fabulous sound, more than ever before.
