This final issue brings to an end Roman Kofman's outstanding Shostakovich symphony cycle which has been ongoing for a good number of years. Recorded in splendid sound and featuring some fine interpretations, this cycle is probably the most desirable in the current digital market.
The Fourteenth Symphony is perhaps Shostakovich's most mysterious work and here it is given a riveting performance comparing well with Haitink and Kondrashin who have long held pre-eminence in this work. Iano Tamar and Taras Shtonda are ideal soloists perfectly suited to the dark broodings which permeate this splendid symphony with "In Prison" being particularly effective.
MD&G provides extremely detailed notes which are important in this symphony as you really have to understand the background behind the work before listening to it. As already indicated the recording is absolutely first class and continues to confirm this company's high standards of engineering. Collectors of this cycle will obviously have to add this issue to their collection but it is also probably the finest modern version of the 14th now around.
