Another lovely arrangement from the prolific Consortium Classicum, who now arrange the popular "Gran Partita" for strings and winds. A very intriguing alternative this is with the harmonious sounds of the strings blending beautifully well with the more esoteric woodwind. They impart a believable momentum to the opening Largo-Allegro that develops excellently. The Menuetto is also given remarkable lilt and all is gay and jovial in the Tema con Variazioni.
Comparing with previous versions such as the wonderful one by the members of the London Symphony Wind Ensemble and a more classic recording by members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra reveals the Consortium Classicum quite significantly on top.
The crystal clear MD&G recording definitely aids proceedings wonderfully. There is also the curious Adagio K. 484a, a pot pourri arrangement of a lost work for 2 clarinets and 3 basset horns that is also worth listening to. A wonderful disc then, and one that certainly warrants investigation.
