Christian Zacharias' Mozart piano concerto cycle is nearing the two-thirds-completed mark with this sixth volume and which includes some of the better known compositions. Zacharias brings an ethereal touch to #21 which has that beautiful Andante (immortalized in the film Elvira Madigan) with the Lausanne players quite up to every subtle nuance asked for.

Concertos 14 and 15 are also great works from Mozart's middle period and here they receive the full symphonic treatment rather à la Barenboim or Géza Anda (still my nostalgic favourite). #15 is particularly expressive – to my mind this is probably the greatest of the composer's piano concertos. The Finale is astonishing for its sublime invention and creativity, again Zacharias is a delightful exponent throughout.

MD&G's SACD sound is an added bonus in these concertos with an ultra clear balance between soloist and conductor. Although earlier volumes in the series may have been somewhat lukewarm this once is certainly highly recommended.
