Hyperion continues to spoil us with these CDs issued coinciding with specific times in the year, most of which feature the lovely St. Paul's Cathedral Choir.
After Advent at St. Paul's we know have the music dealing with the Epiphany. Fantastic stuff that shows what a rich treasure trove awaits rediscovery in this genre. The usual favourites from Wesley, Howells and Holst are matched by some delightful pieces by Eccard, Mendelssohn and Byrd, all skillfully constructed pieces that also demonstrate the prowess of the St. Paul's Choir. If forced to choose a piece from the seventeen on offer, then Judith Bingham's 'Epiphany' surely takes the cake on all counts, especially in its wonderfully dreamlike atmosphere. Cornelius' 'The Three Kings' is also a lovely piece that shows this composer's penchant for this time of the season.
So all lovers of English and similar music must invest in this lovely disc that is wonderfully presented and produced on all counts.
