Hyperion continues issuing Roy Goodman's splendidly infectious Haydn series that was, alas, left incomplete for no apparent reason.

These early symphonies are full of bubbling charm, yet the ubiquitous; 'Philosopher' opens with an almost funereal-like Adagio that plods along in almost processional manner. This is compensated by lively movements that quickly dispel the dark spirit. #23 also contains a long 8 minute Adagio that has all the elements of Haydenesque wonder; this is well portrayed by Goodman and his players. The other two works are more conventional yet no less delightful in their material.

The performances are indeed infectious and one has to commend Hyperion in issuing such quality performances at bargain price. There first twenty five have already been reissued and there are a few later ones on offer later on. Recommended to all Haydn enthusiasts.
