Danacord's project to record the complete works for flute and piano by the Danish composer Joachim Andersen (1847-1909) is now complete. Andersen was one of the finest flautists of the late 19th century and his fame rests mainly on the 188 Etudes which form the core of every flautist's education. His remarkable career was punctuated by prestigious positions in his native Denmark as well as Russia and Germany, and while in Berlin he became a founding member, principal flautist and assistant conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic.

The repertoire on these two volumes was composed over a long period in Andersen's career but the emphasis is on those pieces that are in the Op. 50's bracket. The "Fantaisies Nationales" Op. 59 and the 7 Salon Pieces, Op. 52 are the mainstays in Volume 6 while Volume 7 is dominated by the 4 Pieces, Op. 62, the 3 Pieces, Op. 57 and the Opera Transcriptions, Op. 45.

Andersen's music is virtuosic and colourful, and each piece is permeated by an abundance of melody that entrances the listener with its sweet and perfumed sounds. Jensen and Stengaard perform admirably, and their dedication to the composer's cause is unashamedly patriotic. A beautiful and attractive conclusion to a cycle which should provide many a blissful hour for many years to come.
