If Hogwood's credentials are going to be applied to the massive tranche of Vivaldi concertos on Chandos, then we are in for a superb time!
This new issue is permeated with beautiful shadings, colourful rhythms and a fine sense of momentum that provide an almost ideal set all round. Each of the twelve concertos is a delight to hear but I would make special reference to the works for four violins which are dazzlingly confident as Federico Guglielmo shows his mettle as a superb team leader.
Another trump card in this set is the superb sound which is almost hauntingly clear in all departments and it is surely one of the defining features of the project. Comparisons are odious but I still retain a fancy the Marriner's pioneering set recorded for Argo for this music but now I do believe that this contribution from Hogwood and his stylish Italian players sweeps the board at the top. Highly recommended indeed.
