Iván Fischer is establishing himself as one of the finest conductors around and this glorious Mahler 4 is no exception. From the very beginning you can hear the full orchestral palette in uncanny reality throughout, with the Budapest hall providing astonishing clarity almost placing themselves in your listening room especially through the gorgeous SACD sound which Channel Classics are really getting hold of.
The First movement moves along merrily enough and is quite relaxed in its crucial moments, rather akin to the equally excellent Jonathan Nott on Tudor. I also greatly enjoyed the Ruhevoll experience, this is lovely music, almost making you cringe in your chair with your hair standing on end such is the intensity of the BFO's marvelous playing.
The Finale is also winningly done with the sensuous voice of the lovely Miah Persson an exquisite balm on proceedings as is the little landler in between the two big movements. Channel Classics provide top drawer sound throughout with judicious balance between strings and woodwind in this, one of Mahler's most lightly scored of symphonies. The stylish presentation in digipack form also includes a fine booklet with detailed and informative notes. A winner through and through and one hopes for more from this fine partnership who have already recorded the 2nd and 6th with equally stunning results.
