Gaudeamus has continually provided the medieval and baroque enthusiasts with a steady stream of works that have been resurrected from almost total obscurity. This recent issue features two anonymous masses from the late 15th and early 16th centuries coupled with another fine Magnificat from 1490.

Tavener and his Cappella Nova bring a lofty authority to the dazzling contrapuntal themes of these great works that are a fine legacy of the age. The 'Deus Creator Omnium' has a sparkling and effusive quality to it whilst the other mass is slightly more pensive yet no less noble. I also enjoyed the fine Magnificat that concludes the work in true style. Kenneth Elliot provides some interesting notes that match the product quite perfectly.
